Don't be fooled: SRP advises customers to be wary of scammers over Memorial Day weekend

The Salt River Project is advising customers to be aware of potential utility scams prior to Memorial Day, saying that scam attempts typically increase during holiday weekends.

SRP released a statement on Wednesday letting customers know that the most common utility scams will often have an individual falsely represent themselves as SRP, demanding immediate payment while threatening immediate disconnection of their utility services.

The community-based public power utility organization is the largest electricity provider in the Phoenix area, providing service to nearly 1.1 million customers. SRP also provides water to almost half of the Valley's residents, streaming in about 244 billion gallons of water each year while managing a 13,000-square-mile watershed featuring a wide array of irrigation laterals, reservoirs, wells and canals.

"We typically see an increase in utility scam activity during holiday weekends and in the summer, when customers are more likely to be distracted," Zack Thompson, SRP manager of the residential call center, said in a release. "Our main advice is for customers to hang up and call SRP if they feel something is off. Our customer service team is available 24/7 to answer questions and provide assistance."

SRP said it would never ask for immediate payment, and those at risk of having services disconnected would receive one or more notices by mail or by email if enrolled in SRP eNotes.

SRP does make phone calls to those facing disconnection, the organization said, but will not ask customers to make payments over the phone or ask that customers provide information about their Zelle, MoneyPak, Cash App or Bitcoin accounts — all payment methods that SRP does not accept.

Scammers are able to spoof any number, sometimes tricking caller ID into saying the call is from SRP. Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be from SRP is advised to hang up and directly contact SRP at 602-236-8888 for English or 602-236-1111 for Spanish.
