Pride weekend looks to end with a storm risk in southern Ontario

Folks across southern Ontario will see another warm and humid day on Sunday as festivities get underway in Toronto for this year’s Pride Parade.

A risk for thunderstorms will develop with the muggy air in place, and parts of the region could see the chance for severe weather later in the day.

Weather: Warm temperatures and high humidity will fuel a risk for scattered thunderstorms across the region through Sunday afternoon. The majority of southern Ontario will manage to stay dry on Sunday, but any storms that develop could serve some downpours and gusty winds.

Forecasters don’t expect a significant risk for storms during Sunday afternoon’s Pride Parade in Toronto, but thunderstorms will develop northwest of the Greater Toronto Area during the event.

Later in the day, however, a squall line may develop over Michigan and roll toward southwestern Ontario after dinnertime. This squall could reach severe limits, producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall along its path. Stay alert for watches and warnings throughout the day.

Temperatures will fall on the warmer side of seasonal on Sunday, and the humidity will push humidex values into the mid 30s across the Greater Toronto Area, especially away from the lake. Stay well hydrated if you’ll be outdoors for any length of time.

We’re also watching the risk for air quality issues to creep back into portions of southern Ontario on Sunday as easterly winds carry wildfire smoke down from Quebec.

Southerly winds should return to the region late on Sunday, pushing the smoke back toward the fires in Quebec.

Monday and Beyond

Southern Ontario is locked into a humid pattern into next week, providing ample opportunities for pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Showery, thundery weather is possible across southern Ontario on Monday, with activity spilling right into Tuesday.

Forecasters see a trend toward drier weather heading toward the latter half of the week for much of southern Ontario, but folks across eastern Ontario might not see much improvement.

More of the same is possible looking ahead toward the long holiday weekend, with bouts of unsettled weather and the risk for downpours possible.
