The live-action movie of Dora the Explorer has snatched a Star Wars actor for its villain.

As title's giving away details go, this film is really what it says on the tin. High-school bound Dora finds herself leading Boots – her best friend who happens to be a monkey – Diego and a group of rag-tag kids on a quest to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost civilisation.

And now, via The Hollywood Reporter, we know that Oscar-winning actor Benicio del Toro will be voicing the bushy-tailed terror, Swiper.

He joins a cast that already includes Ant-Man's Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, Eugenio Derbez, Adriana Barraza and Temuera Morrison.

It's also been confirmed that production wrapped in Australia two weeks ago, with the voice actors ready to step in to do their work for the CGI characters.

17-year-old Isabela Moner – who portrays the titular adventurer – recently shared how much it means to be playing this character.

"For me, especially as a Latina, Dora was an amazing role model – she is a strong, adventurous, and fun-loving girl," she explained. "I can't wait to put on the backpack and begin her next adventure!"

This is proving to be something of a Sicario: Day of the Soldado reunion, as Moner appeared alongside del Toro in that movie earlier this year.

The live-action Dora the Explorer is expected to wander into US cinemas on August 2, 2019.
