Dorman's appeal to play in NBPA's national championship tournament approved by SCHSL

The SCHSL executive committee approved Dorman's appeal to participate in the National Basketball Players Association's national championship high school basketball tournament, The Throne, by a 9-2 vote on Friday.

Dorman, as a condition of this approval, will have to forfeit the same number of "open season contests" as games it plays during the tournament. Which means if the Cavaliers play one game in the 16-team single-elimination tournament then it would reduce its allowed "open season contests" by one and so on.

The condition was added by the executive committee, after Dorman proposed it during its presentation. It was said by both the school and committee that this condition would prevent the Cavaliers basketball team from receiving a competitive advantage by being able to compete in more games than its fellow SCHSL teams.

"We were thrilled to receive an invitation to participate in The Throne. Our student-athletes would receive a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play on national TV and compete for a national championship ... we would take great pride in representing Dorman High School and our state," Dorman coach Thomas Ryan said in statement sent out by the school prior to the appeal.

The Throne will be held from March 29 to April 1 in Atlanta at Morehouse College, with Dorman listed as the No. 8 seed.

The field of teams from around the United States are stacked with some of the top talents in the country like the No. 1, 3 and 4 ranked players in 247Sports' composite rankings for the class of 2023: Isaiah Collier, DJ Wagner and Aaron Bradshaw.

Beyond the Cavaliers being able to represent South Carolina on a national stage, while competing against some of the top programs and players in the country, the entirety of the tournament will be broadcast nationally on NBATV and the Fox Sports Networks.

Dorman will play the tournament's first match against the North Carolina Vikings at 10:30 a.m. on March 29.
