Dota 2 Bali Major Group Stage day 5: Tundra, Aster, BetBoom, PSG.LGD make upper bracket

It was a sad day for Southeast Asia Dota, as all three SEA teams were eliminated and won't feature in their home region's Major.

The Dota 2 Bali Major Group Stage has concluded, with the 12 best-performing teams now headed to the Playoffs while the bottom six have been eliminated.

After Team Liquid, Quest Esports, and Gaimin Gladiators secured upper bracket berths in day four, the remaining Playoff-bound teams secured their spots in the final day of the Group Stage.

Surging South American squad Beastcoast, The International 2022 (TI 2022) champions Tundra Esports, and Chinese powerhouse Team Aster joined Team Liquid as the upper bracket teams from Group A.

Meanwhile, star-studded Eastern European squad BetBoom Team and Chinese heavyweights PSG.LGD followed Quest Esports and Gaimin Gladiators to the upper bracket from Group B.

With the Top 4 teams from each group earning upper bracket berths, the fifth to sixth-placed squads on each side had to settle for a lower bracket start.

TI 2021 champions Team Spirit took fifth place in Group A while North America’s Shopify Rebellion took sixth.

Shopify Rebellion finished all their matches in day four and had a 6-10 record. However, Southeast Asian squads Blacklist International and Execration, as well as China’s Invictus Gaming, all had a chance to force a tiebreaker against the North American squad for the last Playoff spot.

Execration was knocked out of the running after drawing their last match against Team Spirit, while Blacklist International booted out Invictus Gaming in a 2-0 sweep.

The ensuing tiebreaker between Shopify Rebellion and Blacklist International saw the North American squad prevail 2-1 to earn their spot in the lower bracket.

Over in Group B, Eastern Europe’s 9Pandas claimed the fifth seed after they swept Southeast Asia’s Bleed Esports, 2-0, in their final match.

As a result, Bleed were forced into a tiebreaker against China’s Azure Ray for the last Playoff spot from Group B.

The Chinese squad defeated Bleed 2-1 to punch their ticket to the Playoffs. With this result, there will unfortunately be no Southeast Asian teams in the Playoffs of the region’s Major this season.

Six teams now head home empty-handed as the Bali Major Group Stage concluded: Blacklist International, Execration, Invictus Gaming, Bleed Esports, Nouns Esports, and Azure Ray.

This also means for Southeast Asia's Bleed and Blacklist, there's no chance of getting more DPC points to qualify for this year's The International 2023 in Seattle.

Group A:

  • Tundra Esports 1-1 Team Aster

Group B:

  • Bleed Esports 0-2 9Pandas

Tiebreakers:

  • Shopify Rebellion 2-1 Blacklist International

  • Bleed Esports 1-2 Azure Ray

  6. Shopify Rebellion: 6-10 (Playoff lower bracket)

  7. Blacklist International: 6-10 (eliminated)

  8. Execration: 5-11 (eliminated)

  9. Invictus Gaming: 4-12 (eliminated)

Group B:

  1. Quest Esports: 12-4 (Playoff upper bracket)

  2. BetBoom Team: 10-6 (Playoff upper bracket)

  3. Gaimin Gladiators: 10-6 (Playoff upper bracket)

  4. PSG.LGD: 10-6 (Playoff upper bracket)

  5. 9Pandas: 8-8 (Playoff lower bracket)

  6. Azure Ray: 7-9 (Playoff lower bracket)

  7. Bleed Esports: 7-9 (eliminated)

  8. Nouns Esports: 5-11 (eliminated)

  9. Evil Geniuses: 3-13 (eliminated)

With the conclusion of the Bali Major Group Stage, there will be a one-day break before the competition resumes in the Playoffs.

The Bali Major Playoffs will take place from 5 to 10 July and will follow a double-elimination format. All Playoff matches will be a best-of-three except for the Grand Finals, which will be a full best-of-five series.

While the competing teams in Bali are fighting for their cut of the US$500,000 prize pool, they have their eyes set on a share of the 3,500 DPC point pool.

Those DPC points will go towards securing all-important direct invites to The International (TI) 2023, this year's iteration of Dota 2's annual multi-million dollar world championship tournament that will be held in Seattle this October.
