Dothan man charged in wife’s cold case murder

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Dothan Police have confirmed an arrest was made early Monday morning that could bring a 22-year-old cold case to a close.

Dothan Police Lt. Scott Owens tells WDHN that 69-year-old Dwight Mills was arrested on Monday, February 26, with the help of U.S. Marshals and charged with the murder of his wife, Sharon Mills.

A press release from Dothan Police shows Sharon Mills went missing just after Christmas in 2001 and was reported missing by her husband. A month later, in February 2002, Sharon Mills’ body was found over the Holmes County line, north of Bonifay, Florida, in a drainage ditch.

According to Lt. Owens, while reviewing the case file on Mill’s death, detectives found new leads and information which led them to reopen the investigation.

“With fresh eyes, current investigators worked new and old leads, tips, and processed several pieces of evidence to solve the case,” said Lt. Owens “As a result, investigators developed enough information to obtain a warrant of arrest for Dwight Mills.”

Dwight Mills is charged with one count of murder and one count of abuse of a corpse. He is being held in the Houston County Jail on a combined $1,510,000 bond.
