Dothan man sentenced in 2021 Morris Street murder

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — A Dothan man has been sentenced to 20 years in the Alabama prison system after a Houston County jury found him guilty of manslaughter during a five-day murder trial earlier this year.

In early January, Kadarrius Salter was found guilty of manslaughter in the 2021 shooting death of 20-year-old Willis Rambo.

Salter initially went to trial on a murder charge, but the jury found him guilty on the lesser charge of manslaughter.

During Salter’s sentencing hearing, Judge Christopher Richardson read letters from Salter’s friends and family requesting a light sentence for their loved one, but the state asked that he receive the maximum sentence of 20 years.

Some of Rambo’s family also attended the hearing.

“God saw whoever did it. God really knows who pulled the trigger,” said Rambo’s grandmother.

Police say Salter and his co-defendant, Christian McCallister, were attempting to shoot at someone else when they accidentally shot and killed Willis in the 900 Block of Morris Street in southeast Dothan. To this day, Salter claimed he was not the gunman.

Along with his 20-year sentence, Salter was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine to the Victim’s Compensation Fund.

Attorneys are trying to set a probation hearing for Salter during the week of March 25 before the time to appeal is up.

McCallister, who was also initially charged with murder, pled guilty to manslaughter in late 2021 after he was denied youthful offender status that same year. He was sentenced to 15 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections.
