A Lubbock family has been adding the final touches to a colorful building off of 82nd, which will soon house a hobby haven in a few weeks.

Emilly Foxworth, along with her parents, sister, nephews, and her husband, have operated Lubbock's HobbyTown at 5610 Frankford Ave. E since 2018. The store is part of the HobbyTown franchise and offers RC vehicles, rocket kits, Legos, puzzles, toys and other hobby-type products.

When they first started to discuss a new space, due to their lease going up in 2023, they decided to build instead of renovate.

"To renovate a building in Lubbock, you may as well just build your own, it's not that much more," Foxworth said. "We're building a legacy, and hope to hand this down to the next generation."

The new location at 7021 82nd St. is double the size of the Frankford space, and in the region Lubbock is growing around.

HobbyTown will double the size of its Lubbock store when it opens at 7021 82nd St., as seen on Monday, Jan. 23, 2023.

With more space, they plan to add a race track and crawler course, along with offering painting classes and meeting rooms for model clubs. They will also have a life-sized velociraptor figure and an astronaut statue.

The father of Willie McCool, an astronaut who died during the Columbia space shuttle explosion in 2003, will also donate some NASA items to display around the statue.

In the days leading up to the grand opening on Feb. 11, the Frankford location will close as they move inventory. Once the 82nd space is open, the first location will close.

On Feb. 11, HobbyTown will celebrate its grand opening with food trucks, giveaways and prizes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

People can follow the store's social media at hobbytown.com, and Facebook.
