The Mackinac Straits Health (MSH) Foundation is proud to announce that Doug and Carol Rearick of Mackinac Island have been named Honorary Chairpersons for the 20th Annual Jewel at Mackinac Golf Tournament, Aug. 25, on Mackinac Island.

“This is our signature event,” said Mike Grisdale, MSH Foundation Director. “The golf outing is one our biggest fundraisers and also brings plenty of awareness to the importance of rural health care in our region. We are privileged to be honoring the Rearicks this year.”

The Rearicks have been longtime supporters of the Mackinac Island community and the Straits area, including the Mackinac Straits Health System. After visiting Mackinac for decades, Carol’s parents bought a home on the Island in 1966. Tim and Anna Timmons developed a wonderful legacy of contributing to many local projects and always appreciated the value of quality health care. The Timmons also served as co-chairs of The Jewel back in 2013.

Professionally, both Doug and Carol were educators prior to retirement. Doug is a former high school principal and Carol was a middle school media specialist. They have adapted well to the Island lifestyle. They have built countless friendships and have become involved with several organizations, including the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, Little Stone Church, Wawashkamo Golf Club, and Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry Company. Plus, they just became grandparents last year!

The couple has enjoyed being part of The Jewel each year. Dough hits the links with his foursome dressed in those traditional knickers and Carol volunteers, usually wearing a unique costume!

The Rearicks have always valued kindness, caring and generosity with both time and gifts. Giving back to the community has always been a priority. Carol continues to serve as a member of the Mackinac Island Medical Center board.

Sponsorships for the golf outing are still available. The presenting sponsors are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Accident Fund. The event features the three golf courses on Mackinac Island – Grand Hotel’s Grand nine and Woods Nine courses, along with the Wawashkamo course. “The MSH Foundation is a 501-C 3 designed as the fundraising organization to assist the Mackinac Straits Health System (MSHS) in fulfilling its mission of providing local access and quality healthcare to our community,” said James North, MSH Foundation board chair. “Donations and contributions from employees, local residents and the business community make it all possible. The golf outing is a very important part of our effort each year.”

“The strong support that we receive from the Jewel event, as well as the entire community throughout the year, support the work of the Health Foundation allowing us to continue our mission of providing quality healthcare to the patients and communities we serve,” said Karen Cheeseman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MSHS.
