Doug Marrah lauded by Ashland BOE for leadership, service to school district

KEY ACTION The board heard accolades and offered their own for Superintendent Doug Marrah, who is retiring at the end of the calendar year.

DISCUSSION Brian Stevens, president-elect of the Ohio Music Education Association announced Marrah as the 2023 Outstanding School Administrator for his impact on music education in the school and the community. He was nominated by Marty Kral, Ashland's director of bands, for his strong commitment to arts, athletics and academics. The official presentation of the award will be made at the Feb. 4 OMEA professional development conference in Columbus.

Dwight McElfresh presented Marrah with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Ashland City Schools Foundation for his support and service to the district and his positive impact on students and staff.

"(Marrah) has a tremendous ability to connect willing donors with fabulous programs involving our students," McElfresh said.

Board members also complimented Marrah on his leadership and commitment to students and praised the support of his wife, Jennifer.

OTHER ACTION

Unanimously approved negotiating a new contract for Treasurer Kyle Klingler, whose contract expires at the end of the year. "You have made the job your own," said board President Zack Truax, commending Klingler for his work and noting the board wants to "lock you down for awhile" in appreciation of his service.

FOR YOUR INFO

The board honored Ashland High School All-Ohio athletes Claire Plank, girls soccer; Owen Sharick, boys soccer; Jon Metzger, football receiver; and Ethan Truax, football linebacker, and recognized their individual achievements.

UP NEXT Meets at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 for an organizational session in the administrative offices, 1407 Claremont Ave., Ashland.
