Douglas boys and St. Thomas girls win BCAA golf tourney. Columbus boys second at Honda event

The Douglas boys’ golf team and St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ golf team won the BCAA Big Eight/Damian Huttenhoff Golf Championships at the Country Club of Coral Springs.

The champion Raiders had three golfers in the Top 5. Senior Lily Celentano won the tournament (medalist honors) with 1-over par 72. Senior teammate Erin Marcelino tied for second at 73. Morgan Herring, another St. Thomas Aquinas senior, was fifth at 75.

Cardinal Gibbons and Douglas tied for second at 338, with the Eagles gaining the edge on the tiebreaker.

Cynthia Liu, a junior, and Cassidy Charles, a sophomore, led Douglas. Senior Kaylee Ehret and sophomore Elizabeth Smith keyed Gibbons.

In a reverse, Douglas won the boys’ title, and the Raiders were the runners-up.

The Eagles top five scorers were in the Top 10. Andres Barraza, a senior, won medalist honors with 5-under 66. Teammates TJ Thompson, a junior, and Devan Chahal, a senior, were second and third, respectively. Thompson fired a 1-under 70. Chahal a 1-over 72.

St. Thomas Aquinas shared a three-way tie for fourth with 73s from sophomore Sammy Gilden, senior Ben Weins and junior Mathew Marcelino.

Honda Classic Golf

The Columbus boys’ golf team was second of 18 teams at the Honda Classic High School Invitational at PGA National in West Palm, one of the toughest courses in Florida and home to the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic.

The Explorers went into the final round in fifth place, just five strokes back of the top spot.

They moved into second place with a strong round.

The Explorers were led by Sebastian Kawas, who shot even par (72) with five birdies to help the Explorers finish second.

Hans Risvaer (75), Christian Figueredo (75) and Max Fonseca (75) contributed by each shooting 3 over par.

Teams from Texas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona, joined top-ranked teams in Florida for the event.

Columbus golf coach Michael Marinelli said: “I am extremely proud of our guys and the way they played.”
