Douglas Byrd, Cape Fear, South View football move season openers to Thursday

Douglas Byrd, Cape Fear and South View will kick off the 2022 high school football season for Fayetteville.

Due to the threat of rain and thunderstorms Friday, the Eagles, Colts and Tigers decided to move their games to Thursday.

Douglas Byrd will travel to Red Springs for a 7 p.m. kickoff Thursday. Cape Fear will host Durham Riverside at 7:30 p.m. South View is scheduled to play at Overhills at 7 p.m.

The Eagles posted a 1-9 record in Maurice Huey’s debut season as coach. Red Springs was 1-6 last season before hiring former Red Devil Tim Ray.

In the 2021 meeting between the teams, Red Springs earned a 22-8 victory for its lone win of the season. In preseason coaches polls, both squads were picked to finish last in their conferences this season.
