Up and down the street

Newest fad at the Century of Progress is buying a baby turtle and mailing it to a friend or relative. Carl Lovdahl got one in the mail Friday from his sister. It is less than three inches long and about one-sixth that high. On its shell is printed "souvenir of Century of Progress." It was mailed in a small cardboard box.

What, no extra points?

Alphonse "Tuffy" Leemans, pride of Allouez, was off form last Saturday, when the George Washington university football team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 26 to 0.

All the former East high star did was run 97 yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, gallop 71 yards through a broken field for another touchdown in the same period, and register another score in the second quarter with a 31-yard run.

Leemans was also responsible for the other touchdown, passing 37 yards to an end to put the ball in position for the final tally of the game. Leemans, who is only a sophomore at G.W., gained 181 1/2 yards from scrimmage in 17 tries, nearly 11 yards a crack, and that does not include his 97-yard run from kickoff.

Scribes in the national capital are making much of the fact that Leemans hails from Allouez, which was also the stamping grounds of Ernie Nevers, Stanford's all-time all-American, who was a former all-around star for Superior Central.

Library Internet access popular

The Superior Public library is covering new territory with the arrival of free Internet access. The library went "live" mid-October and the computers have been in full use since then.

Library Director Janet Ronnback said the library has hoped for Internet access for a long time.

The library has five computers in the Adult Area and one in the Children's Area. One of the computers to be used by adults has been modified for visually impaired or handicapped people.

Julie Zachau, Adult Services librarian said a magnified screen is one of the computer's adaptations.

Zachau said people can come in with their own floppy disk, but it must be compatible to the computer's software.

Amnicon man arrives home to find clothes, household goods gone

Somebody has outfitted himself and his home at the expense of Al Powers who lives about a half mile south of Four Corners.

While Powers was away from his home Friday thieves broke into his home and garage and literally "cleaned him out." They took everything from snow shoes to clothes pins.

Deputies investigating for the sheriff's office have been unable to get any information which might lead to the arrest of the robber.

Young voters get taste of politics

Roughly 144 young voters got an experience of what the right to vote is really about at Bryant Elementary School. The fourth-graders in Mary Brand's class exercised their yet premature right to vote by participating in a mock election held in conjunction with the general election on Tuesday.

"Voting is probably the second most important thing government can do with the people," said junior voter James Pederson, 9, who helped man the voter's registration table.

Pederson and classmates Sarah Erickson and Nathan Farmer, both 9, were in charge of checking off student names and giving them a number that signified their time to vote.

"We are learning (how to vote) now so we will know how to do it when we've gotten older," Farmer said.

Generosity of many makes life easier for one

Last July, Brand Bourque was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, a degenerative muscular disease. For 24 years Bourque had been a vivid staff member at SSHS as the resident school psychologist. The disease attacked swiftly, and Bourque was required to take leave of his job this past fall.

But Bourque was faced with yet another disheartening possibility — the possibility that he may have to leave his home. Bourque was in need of a wheelchair ramp to access his split level home, but could not find the funding for such an extensive ramp that would reach to the second floor of the house.

The SSHS students in the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) along with their teacher, Dale VanErt, took it upon themselves to use what they had learned in order to give something back to their former school psychologist — the much needed ramp.

The students began working on the ramp during the second week of school and on Thursday they brought it to Bourque's home.
