Dove Cameron has already established her place as a rising queer icon in modern pop music, but her latest collaboration with Diplo is a glorious reminder of just how well-deserved that status is.

The former Disney Channel star lent her vocal talents to the recently released “Use Me (Brutal Hearts),” which also features a verse from Sturgill Simpson under the moniker Johnny Blue Skies. The song itself is a cover of a 2010 Bedouin Soundclash track simply titled “Brutal Hearts,” given a haunting twist with new instrumentals and Cameron’s vocals.

But it’s the video that really makes the collaborative effort shine. Cameron takes on the role of an intensely self-assured lounge singer at a seedy bar with an eccentric clientele made up of cowboys, pole dancers, mechanical bull riders, Diplo himself, and Sean Penn lip syncing Simpson’s part in the song.

Diplo, who recently opened up about his sexuality, previously spoke about his experience creating the upcoming album this track is from, Thomas Wesley: Chapter 2 — Swamp Savant, saying, “I tried on a lot of cowboy hats. I rode a lot of motorcycles and horses basically reflected on my whole life and career and connection with this music.”

“This is the greatest single piece of work I’ve ever done, I can promise you that,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cameron has been killing it over on the Chicago-inspired second season of Schmigadoon, and has knocked it out of the park with each new song she drops in her music career, starting with last year’s surprise banger, “Boyfriend."

“It’s my aspiration to make music that everybody can enjoy — except straight men,” she joked.
