Dover 11-year-olds earn big win in New England Cal Ripken tourney with dominant performance

NEW CANAAN, Connecticut — The New Hampshire champion Dover Cal Ripken 11-year-old baseball team continued its dominance in the New England regional tournament on Sunday. Brady Flynn tossed a no-hitter as Dover (2-0) whipped Hudson, Massachusetts, 15-0, in three innings via the mercy rule.

Flynn whiffed two and walked one during his abbreviated no-no.

“He was in control of the game,” coach Mike Lynch said. “He threw a ton of strikes. They put balls in play. The defense made the plays to keep them off the bases.”

Dover plays Tuesday afternoon, 1:30 p.m., against West Hartford, Connecticut (2-0). The game was rained out Monday. The winner will earn a  bye to the semis of the championship round on Thursday. The loser will be the No. 2 seed from Pool B and play the No. 3 seed from Pool A on Wednesday.

Dover scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second and seven in the third. They were still batting in the third when they ended the game via the mercy rule.

Dover collected 12 hits, led by Owen Lovering, who was 2 for 2 with three runs and three RBIs; Ben Cheek went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs; Trey Longuil was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Connor Lynch went 1 for 2 with a run and four RBIs. Flynn was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI.

Dover took the lead for good in the first inning with three runs. Connor Lynch had a sacfice fly that scored Longuil. Lovering had an RBI infield base hit and Des Fennessy added an RBI single to right field.

Lovering had the big hit in the second, a two-run single and he later scored on a Hudson throwing error.

In the third, Connor Lynch belted a three-run double to highlight the frame. Flynn ended the game with a run-scoring single.

The Dover team is looking to build on its past success. In 2021, as 10-year-olds, the Dover team won the New Hampshire and New England championships to qualify for the Cal Ripken World Series, where Dover advanced to the final 12 among 20 teams. Dover also previously won a state title as 8-year-olds and won the district title as 9-year-olds, a year when there was no state tournament due to COVID-19.
