Dover 400th presents ‘Voices of Dover’

DOVER — In celebration of Dover’s 400th anniversary in 2023, the 400th Committee has been working with city media services director Mike Gillis and former Foster’s Daily Democrat editor Wayne Chick to interview, film, and record for posterity some reminiscent stories from our present-day citizens. This new video series, “Voices of Dover," seeks to preserve local residents’ recollections of Dover: its people, its schools, its businesses, its memorable moments. The Committee plans to release the first video in the series on May 15, and then will release one or two new videos weekly after that, throughout 2023. Each of these interviews will feature storytelling, humor, insight, family lore and nostalgia for Dover days gone by.

The videos may be viewed at dovernh.viebit.com/index.php?folder=Dover400 or at Dover400.org. Links will also be posted on the Dover400 Facebook page. Be sure to catch each one as they’re released. The official mission of the Dover400 Committee is “to honor our past, celebrate our present, and to inspire our future through meaningful and creative community engagement." The “Voices of Dover” video project helps fulfill that mission.

Like last year, 550 full-size American flags will be dedicated to a veteran of your choosing. If you want to participate and don’t have a veteran in mind, you may allow Vouchers for Veterans to choose a Vietnam Veteran from New Hampshire or Maine who was killed in action. All flags have a yellow silk ribbon and laminated card with the veteran’s name, branch, rank, and insignia. Veterans killed while serving will be denoted by a black cross.

On Monday at 11 a.m. following the Memorial Day Parade, a small service will take place with a presentation of colors, the laying of the wreaths and a few words by Mayor Paul Callaghan and former Lt. Lions Club welcomes Kennebunk Savings Bank as Corn Hole Tournament sponsor

DOVER — The Dover, Rollinsford, South Berwick Lions Club welcomes Kennebunk Savings Bank as a Bronze Sponsor for its second annual Charity Corn Hole Tournament.

The Corn Hole Tournament, which takes place at The Barn at Dunn Farm in Berwick, Maine on Aug. 12, will benefit pediatric cancer research at Children's Hospital at Dartmouth.  Gold, Silver and Bronze Sponsorships are available through June 14.

Last year the group raised $3,400 for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Health thanks to the local business community that rallied to support the cause.  This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 for Dartmouth Health Children’s, New Hampshire's only children's hospital. According to Sarah E. Earnest, Development Officer of the Dartmouth Cancer Center, Dartmouth is poised to have a direct and immediate impact on preventing cancer in children as a national leader in cancer research. Dartmouth researchers are working to refine approaches, protocols, and education for pediatric screening in a way that empowers doctors and parents — and saves children’s lives.

Turnout is expected to exceed 500 people, including players and spectators. Sponsors will be featured on T-shirts, banners, plus additional options.
