Dover church to offer classes on how to handle finances

DOVER ― Dover First Christian Church will be offering classes from Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, beginning Aug. 14.

The classes, designed to help get people out of debt and become financially independent, will run through Oct. 9 and will be taught by the church's youth pastor, Andrew George. Classes will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church, located at 3029 N. Wooster Ave., Dover.

The program is open to everyone in the community. Cost is $130.

Participants will watch Ramsey videos, in which he explains the seven baby steps to dump debt and build wealth. Those steps are: create an emergency fund; pay off all your debt, excluding your mortgage; save three to six months for expenses; prepare your children for their future; pay off your house early; and build wealth so that you are able to give to others.

Ramsey, a well-known radio personality and author, has written several books on the subject of personal finances.

"I know the value of that program," George said. "I'm 24 and I've got a retirement account set up good. I'm not in debt, outside a mortgage, which I'm working on."

He now lives on a budget. "It has given me more freedom, because before I had a budget, it was like, do I have this in my account? Can I afford this? Now, I know it's there, I know it's taken care of so I'm good to go," he said.

Those wanting to attend the classes can register at fpu.com/1151611. Deadline to register is Aug. 13.
