DOVER — The city of Dover is seeking donations to erect a statue to honor its K-9 police dogs that have died.

The move was prompted by the death in February of K-9 Rex, a Belgian Malinois that was obtained by the city in 2014. Officials have said the dog was a great asset to the Dover Police Department.

Rex was the first police dog the city had had in many years.

"He was a great dog, and this is just something to remember him," said Councilwoman Sandy Moss, who is spearheading efforts for the statue.

The monument will have a sandstone base with little plaques on it in the shape of paw prints where the names of deceased police dogs will be inscribed. There will be space to honor future K-9 officers that Dover may have.

The monument will be topped by a bronze statue of a Belgian Malinois.

Moss said the monument will be placed on the square near the police station.

She consulted with Scott Harmon, the city's cemetery superintendent, who said the monument will cost between $16,000 and $17,000. That will include $10,000 for the bronze statue of a dog.

The monument will be paid for entirely by donations.

Anyone who would like to make a donation can send a check made out to the City of Dover, with K-9 memorial in the memo line. Donations can be sent to the attention of Auditor Nicole Stoldt, 122 E. Third St., Dover, Ohio 44622.
