Dover High School to hold event to honor National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Dover High School will hold a special recognition to honor National Girls & Women in Sports Day Saturday at the girls basketball games vs. Cambridge.

The Junior Varsity game begins at 1 p.m., and all girls of school age will get free admission.

A recognition will take place between games to recognize NGWSD, which is officially dated for Feb. 2. The cheerleaders and the dance team will participate, and “local legends” Jane Miceli Rinehart, Sue Monaco Bonaduce, Connie Pearson Griffith, Kim France Thomson, Esther Avery, Judy Vasbinder, and Jeannine Kennedy, who paved the way as initial members and coaches of girls sports at DHS, will be recognized and included in the festivities.

The high school has also organized a highlight video and picture of all girls participating in athletics and plans to include announcements throughout the week of Jan. 31 in celebration of the day and the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Athletes will visit elementary schools to read in classrooms and participate in physical education classes throughout the week.
