Dover news: Wi-Fi project to begin, new businesses open, trick or treat date set

DOVER ‒ Mayor Shane Gunnoe provided city council members with an update on Tuesday of activities going on throughout the city of Dover.

  • Hardware installation of Phase I of the city's public Wi-Fi project is set to begin this month in Dover City Park. The mayor said he expected contractors to be onsite on Sept. 18 to attach the necessary hardware to implement free public Wi-Fi throughout most of the park. This process is expected to take several weeks to complete.

  • Work will begin this fall on installation of a 12-inch water line from the Harger Street area, under the Tuscarawas River, to link up with existing water lines near state Route 39. "This project has been identified as a major priority for our water department to help ensure needed redundancy and support future growth for our utility customers on the far west side of Dover," Gunnoe said. The project is largely being paid for with money from the American Rescue Plan Act.

  • The city is obtaining estimates from vendors to add mobile data terminals in each of the city's eight police cruisers. Mobile data terminals are specialized computers that help improve communications and increase an officer's efficiency in the field and allow them to spend more time on patrol. The mayor said his goal is to have a mobile data terminal in each cruiser by the end of the year.

  • Artist Cathy Straub has completed Dover's sculpture for the countywide Love Tusc project. "I have had the opportunity to see it and I believe it is a wonderful tribute to our community and the spirit of Dover," Gunnoe said. A public viewing of the completed sculptures from communities around Tuscarawas County will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University at Tuscarawas in New Philadelphia. After the sculpture is released by the Tuscarawas Arts Partnership (which is sponsoring the project), the Dover sculpture will be permanently displayed in the downtown.

  • Three new small businesses recently opened in Dover ‒ Spray Foam Genie on the Boulevard, The Barn Yard on West Third Street and Link Supply on West Third Street.

  • The last day for the Dover City Farmer's Market is Sept. 28. The market is open each Thursday in Dover City Park, beside Field No. 1, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

  • The annual Dover Lion's Club Halloween parade will be held on Oct. 25, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Trick or Treat will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28.
