Dover semi driver dies in crash with SUV in Holmes County

PAINT TWP. − A Dover man died Monday in a two-vehicle crash that seriously injured two others, trapping them in their SUV and closing U.S. Route 62 at County Road 187 for several hours.

According to a news release from Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly, Richard S. Hunsinger, 71, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:51 a.m. crash by Mt. Eaton EMS.

Hunsinger was driving a semi pulling a tanker filled with a cheese product that struck an SUV driven by Priscilla L. Scheufler, 60, of Dundee.

According to the release, Scheufler was stopped at the intersection then pulled into the path of the semi, which was traveling southwest on Route 62 and was struck head-on. The semi rolled onto its side with the cab striking guide wires causing a power pole to snap and knocking down power lines onto the cab and County Road 187. The semi stopped on the west side of the roadway with the cab over a small embankment. The trailer remained attached.

Scheufler's vehicle was pushed back from the intersection and stopped in the southwest lane of Route 62. She, and a front-seat passenger, William K. Scheufler, 33, of Dundee, were trapped in the vehicle for some time before being flown to Akron City Hospital with serious injuries, the release states.

Route 62 remained closed for several hours during the investigation and while crews replaced the power pole and lines.

Paint Township-Winesburg, Mt. Eaton and Wilmot fire and EMS, along with Holmes County Coroner Dr. Leon Miller, the Holmes County prosecutor, county EMA, ODOT District 11 and Holmes Wayne Rural Electric assisted.
