Dover-Sherborn student killed in boat crash in Dennis

A 17-year-old Dover-Sherborn High School student was killed Friday night after a boat crashed into a jetty in Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis.

Principal John Smith announced rising senior and lacrosse star Sadie Mauro's death in an email to the community, calling the school "devastated and heartbroken."

"Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit," wrote Smith. "She had such a strong sense of self and had a love for adventure and anything outdoors.  A hardworking student and great athlete, Sadie was genuine and effortlessly kind."

Mauro was committed to play lacrosse at Gettysburg College, according to her LinkedIn page.

State police continue search for debris to find the cause of the crash

In a written statement, Massachusetts State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said the victim's body was pulled from the water by a regional dive team with assistance from Dennis Fire-Rescue at about 11:30 p.m. Friday during a joint-agency search off Cold Storage Beach.

Procopio said Saturday morning that six people, including the girl who sustained fatal injuries, were on the boat. At least one other boat passenger, a teenage boy, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with a cut on his head, he said.

On Saturday, the Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit and the state police's Underwater Recovery Unit, along with Massachusetts Environmental Police marine resources, were conducting dive operations at the crash site to search for debris from the boat for the ongoing investigation into what caused the boat to hit the stone jetty.

A statement from the Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois's office said the crash was into the jetty by the channel leading to the Northside Marina in Sesuit Harbor. It also identified the boat as "a Regulator equipped with two outboard 250 horsepower engines bearing an Alabama registration."

At Dover-Sherborn High School a gathering is planned for Monday

Dover-Sherborn High School's library will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Monday for all middle and high school students and staff to gather, Smith said. Members of the counseling team will be on hand along with a crisis counselor from the Riverside Trauma Center and service dogs from both the Dover and Sherborn police departments.

Superintendent Elizabeth McCoy said Sadie Mauro lived in Sherborn with her parents and younger brother, who is a rising ninth grader. She called the district community "strong and known for its strength and resiliency in the face of unimaginable tragedy."

"I will be hugging my children extra tight this evening - I am sure you will do the same," wrote McCoy in her own statement.
