#StaffingShortage

With just over a month to go before the school year begins, the Rochester City School District has hundreds of vacancies, in particular among its teaching corps. The reasons for the shortage are myriad and reflect COVID-era hiring challenges in all industries. In urban schools in particular, teachers have departed in droves, discouraged by difficult and often chaotic school conditions in 2021-22 as students returned from pandemic isolation. Rochester Teachers Association President Adam Urbanski said the teacher shortage largely reflects younger teachers taking better-paying, less stressful jobs in suburban districts. But he also criticized “the lack of support from central office and the vilification of teachers by school board members or central office administrators.”

#HitAndRun

A 19-year-old Rochester man died Wednesday afternoon at Strong Memorial Hospital from injuries he suffered in a hit-and-run crash just after midnight Wednesday on Lake Avenue, Rochester police said. The man was riding a bike south on Lake Avenue when he was struck by a northbound vehicle, just north of Riverside Cemetery. Police did not release the victim’s name and are searching for the driver, who did not stop.

#VictimIdentified

Rochester police have identified the man shot to death early Saturday morning while sitting in his vehicle outside 496 Jay St. as Kailee White Sr., 42, of Rochester. His killing marked the city’s 45th homicide of 2022.
