Downtown Berkley to be transformed into street art exhibit during festival

Art festivals abound all over Michigan this summer, but this weekend, an especially unique one is set to take place in downtown Berkley.

The Berkley Street Art Fest, set for Saturday, July 16, uniquely celebrates both amateur and professional street artists. Artists of all ages can enter competitions and test their street art skills against others.

Professionals and hobbyists alike will get a chance to compete.

In addition, renowned chalk artist David Zinn's work will be on display throughout downtown.

And muralist Daniel Cascardo will offer opportunities to participate in the creative process with his Art Action Experience.

Cascardo will create a black and white mural, and participants will be invited to add their own personal touches of color and patterns to the mural.

Children will have the opportunity to express their inner artist in a hands-on art station, and to jump to their heart's content in a bounce house.

Meanwhile, parents will be able to enjoy selections offered by vendors at the Shop for Good Village.

“The Shop for Good Village initiative was done to find wonderful vendors and products that led to something good happening in the world,” said organizer RoseAnn Nicolai. “Whether using recycled materials in their products, or donating proceeds to charity, all vendors sell products making some kind of positive change for their community.”

Shoppers will be able to browse items supporting and conveying inspirational messages.

This year’s Street Art Fest will be held July 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Coolidge Highway between Catalpa Drive and Beverly Boulevard in Berkley.
