Downtown gets a patisserie with the opening of The Gilded Acorn in the First National Center

The Gilded Age comes to downtown Oklahoma City on Thursday with the opening of The Gilded Acorn.

The newest offering from chef Andrew Black (Black Walnut and Grey Sweater) is a classic patisserie that pays homage to the industrial and economic explosion of the late 19th-Century. Few local chefs have gained more attention this year than Black, who is coming off his first James Beard Award nomination.

The Gilded Acorn, inside the First National Center at 120 N. Robinson, will offer macarons, house-made chocolates, gelato, cookies, traditional French cakes, high tea service, an expansive coffee menu and a curated collection of champagne from around the world.

"Our goal is to bring a sweet new gourmet experience to the epicenter of downtown in one of the most exciting new buildings to open in Oklahoma City this century,” Black said. "We are thrilled to be a part of this monumental project and look forward to opening our doors to locals and travelers near and far this fall.”

The art deco cafe space features decadent green-and-gold floral wallpaper and tuxedo tile. Sidewalk seating offers breakfast, lunch and drop-ins for champagne, coffee or high tea.

High tea service is reservation-only and must be booked two days in advance. Cost is $45 per person and includes a wide selection of tea, house-made scones, petite desserts and bites. It's available from 3 to 7 p.m. daily.

Among The Gilded Acorn's desserts you'll find pistachio and crème brûlée eclairs, mascarpone mousse raspberry bombs and Gilded Acorn Chocolate Mousse.

Sandwiches include a champagne poached chicken sandwich with caramelized apple, arugula and melted brie; a French dip with provolone cheese, chipotle and pickled onions; and a quiche Lorraine ham and cheese.

Premium shared plates are also available with offerings that include shock oysters, toast and caviar, Torchon, and Pate de Champagne.

Salads will be available in niçoise shrimp and house, which includes butter lettuce, frisée, bacon vinaigrette, poached egg, rosemary croutons, candied bacon and sundried tomatoes.

Black's next project is The Phantom Door, which is scheduled haunt eastern Bricktown later this year.

Whispers whistling down the The 16th Street Plaza District indicate the former home of Maples Barbecue is the future home of The Mule. Wait, what? Didn't The Mule originate in The Plaza? Isn't the OG Mule location still operating in The Plaza?

Last winter, Jenny Nguyen was telling folks she would open a new Vietnamese vermicelli bowl shop called Bun Box, this summer in the Asian District. Alas, a different bun in the oven emerged. Instead of vermicelli bowls, Jenny delivered a healthy baby girl this summer. Jenny's dad Minh brought Lee's Sandwiches to town almost 20 years ago, and Jenny started running the place back in 2018. With motherhood secured for her juggling act, Jenny will add new business owner this fall.
