Downtown Greensburg businesses to offer pie samples, display scarecrow contest entries

Oct. 15—Visitors to Greensburg will be able to indulge their sweet tooths while browsing in downtown shops during an inaugural Harvest Pie Walk organized by the Greensburg Business and Professional Association.

"We're looking forward to a fun event," said Amy Beeghly, president of the association. "People can walk their pie off while they're walking around town."

Close to a dozen downtown businesses will serve samples of pies provided by area bakers from 5 to 8 p.m.

Oct. 20. Only 100 tickets are being sold for the event, at $15 each. They can be purchased in advance at Shop

GreensburgPA.com or in person at any of the participating locations.

"We thought we would try this event," Beeghly said, noting it has the dual goal of attracting people to the downtown business district while supporting local bakers.

In addition to providing samples, she said, "They will be taking orders for pies, and some of them will be selling other baked goods."

McFeeley's Gourmet Chocolate will offer samples of apple pie while Yumzio Bistro will have pumpkin and peanut butter pies. Hors d'oeuvre-style mini-pies of apple or pumpkin will be provided by Sharon's Cookies.

Other participating bakers include Market Street Pastries, Peinetti's Bakery, Sand Hill Berries, Sweet Finley's Cookies and Tyler's Bakery.

Businesses taking part in the event include Artisans of Hands and Heart, Beeghly & Co. Jewelers, Crossroads Boutique and Cattiva, Lapels, A Fine Men's Clothier, The Lighting Gallery, Mancuso's, McFeely's Gourmet Chocolate, Penelope's Gifts and More, Personalized Colors, Petagogy and Shepherd's Keeper.

Scarecrow votes help nonprofits

The businesses also are displaying scarecrows entered in a contest by local organizations. Voting for a favorite scarecrow is underway and will continue until Oct. 22.

Each vote for a scarecrow costs $1, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit group that created it. The winner in the voting will be announced Oct. 24.

Among the organizations planning to enter scarecrows are Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, the Greensburg YMCA, Westmoreland Community Action, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region, Relay for Life, Heal Animal Rescue and the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library.

Pie Walk participants will begin by visiting The Lighting Gallery, 450 S. Main St., where free parking will be offered and event wristbands and maps will be distributed.
