Downtown Kansas City streets to close for the Big 12 tournament and Big 12 Run

Hundreds of basketball fans are expected to make their way to Kansas City next week for the Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

As a result, several downtown streets around the Sprint Center will be closed.

Motorists should expect delays and traffic congestion in the central downtown area. Fan activities in addition to the games will require the closures of several streets near the arena.

The following streets will be closed:

Grand Boulevard, between 13th Street and Truman Road, will close at 10 a.m. Monday and reopen by 6 a.m., Sunday, March 15.

14th Street, between Walnut Street and Grand, will be closed at 10 a.m., Monday and reopen at 6 a.m., Sunday, March 15.

14th Street, between Main and Walnut, will close at 10 a.m. Tuesday and reopen by midnight Sunday, March 15.

Walnut Street, between 13th Street and Truman Road, will be closed at 6 p.m., Monday through 6 a.m., Sunday, March 15.

Big 12 Run

Kansas City’s Big 12 Run takes place Saturday, March 14 and will require street closures on a rolling basis beginning at 8 a.m. until the race concludes at 11:30 a.m. Those closures include:

Grand Boulevard, between Eighth and 12th streets and between Truman and Pershing roads.

Eighth Street, between Grand and Holmes Street.

Holmes Street, between Eighth and 18th streets and between 30th and 31st streets.

Truman Road, between Holmes Street and Woodland Avenue and between Grand and Oak Street.

Woodland Avenue, between Truman Road and 18th Street.

18th Street, between Woodland and Vine Street and between Holmes Street and Grand Boulevard.

Vine Street, between 18th Street and 17th Terrace.

17th Terrace, between Vine Street and The Paseo.

The Paseo, between 17th Terrace and 31st Street.

31st Street, between The Paseo and Holmes Street.

30th Street, between Holmes Street and McGee Street.

McGee Street, between Holmes Street and Gillham Road.

Gillham Road, between McGee Street and Pershing Road.

Oak Street, between Truman Road and Ninth Street.

Ninth Street, between Oak and Grand.

Fans traveling downtown should allow for extra time and anticipate traffic congestion and delays. They should use public transportation.

Kansas City police remind fans to lock their vehicles and placed valuables out of sight.
