Downtown Orlando block party prepares for New Year’s Eve festivities

Orlando bars are gearing up for big crowds and a busy New Year’s Eve as people pack downtown.

In Thornton Park, a street party will start in a couple of hours.

6,500 people are expected to attend the block party, and bar owners have planned for every possible situation.

Orlando police officers and security teams watch the crowds Saturday evening.

Bar staff is also trained to handle many situations.

This is the 14th year that Thornton Park has held this block party.

Greg Peters from Graffiti Junktion said that in the past, there have never been any issues.

He said local bars still have to over plan just to be safe.

“We are living in a quite crazy world right now, but I’m confident in our police officers that are down here working and my staff,” Peters said.

Orlando police officers are also issuing several warnings on social media to remind people to not drink and drive.

Police are also asking people to be alert because there will be thousands of people walking around downtown Saturday night.

The Thornton Park block party starts at 8:30 and will end at 2 a.m. There is another party that will be on Wall Street and the Orange Drop on Church Street at midnight.
