Downtown Woods Hole charmer: Historic home with water views at $1.35M

Does anything beat living in a seaside village? Especially when you can stroll into town for a bit of shopping and a meal, or over to the library for a dollop of knowledge. And in the case of this historic Woods Hole home, add in water views and the amazing fact that you can walk to the ferry dock for a casual voyage to Martha's Vineyard.

The Victorian-inspired home, built circa 1875 and priced at  $1,350,000, offers nine bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half bath. It's nestled into a sweet spot on Little Harbor Road, near the Coast Guard station.

"This home is amazing," said listing agent  Kerrie Marzot of Sotheby's International Realty. "'There's so much history associated with it."

The house was built by Augustus Messer, an important figure in the railroad history of Woods Hole. According to a Massachusetts Historical Commission report on the home, "Messer was a conductor on the Boston to Woods Hole railroad, and is noted as bringing the first train into Woods Hole in 1872."

This historic Woods Hole home, on the market for $1.35 million, offers water views and easy access to ferries and the Shining Sea Bikeway.

Messer was a conductor for 32 years "including 14 years running the noted 'Dude Train,' which served summer residents who worked in Boston," according to the report. He likely built the structure to serve as a store, possibly with living quarters above the first floor.

There is a covered front porch with views of the water, and other rooms with harbor views.

With 3,282 square feet of living space, the home offers plenty of room to relax and spread out. Much of the period charm has been maintained, including a spacious living room with hardwood floors and a formal dining room. There's also a covered front porch with views of the water, and many of the rooms of the home offer a harbor view.

Atop the house, a windowed cupola offers fantastic panoramic views of the village and water. And the great thing about water views in Woods Hole is that there is always fun boat traffic to observe: ferries, Coast Guard vessels and pleasure craft are often in play.

In the nuts and bolts department, the home is located on the town sewer system and has off-street parking. Biking fans will love the proximity of the glorious Shining Sea Bikeway, located just a few pedals from the home.

If village life in a large and historic Woods Hole home sounds intriguing, it may be worth a visit to one of the Cape's most interesting places for a look-see.
