‘Downward Dog’: What Will Happen In Season 1, Episode 2?

Nan ( Allison Tolman) continues to keep her odd relationship with her former boyfriend Jason ( Lucas Neff) in Season 1, episode 2 of “Downward Dog.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “Boundaries,” Nan installs an automatic dog door in her place so she can take away Jason’s key while still keeping him as Martin’s (voiced by Samm Hodges) dog walker. Interestingly, this causes Martin to think that Jason can open doors with his mind.

Nan and Jason have been broken up for a while at the beginning of the series premiere. The two, however, reconnected the day after Nan drank-dialled Jason, telling him to come to her house and get his “stupid” motorcycle parked at her tiny doorstep. Funnily enough, Nan repeatedly told Jason over the phone that she no longer loves him but had always ended her call with “I love you.”

When Jason came to her place the next day to finally get his motorcycle, Nan surprisingly had the bravado to ask him to take Martin out for a while so she could complete the ad campaign she would present to her bosses at work.

Although Martin admitted that Jason has never been somebody who he “really deeply respected,” he did say that “things are moving in a positive direction” after he spent some fun time with his owner’s ex playing fetch. “I feel like this is the universe saying, ‘Hey, you know what? You are on the right track.’”

When Jason and Martin returned home, Jason and Nan had a little chat about the ad campaign she’s working on. Their conversation then led to sex, much to Martin’s disappointment. Although Nan and Jason have slept together, the two are clearly not back together. And because the viewers are not yet privy to the reason they split in the first place, it’s hard to tell how long they can keep their unusual relationship.

Elsewhere in next week’s episode, Nan’s boss, Kevin ( Barry Rothbart), is uncertain about the ad campaign that Nan pitched to the corporate bosses in the series premiere.

At the end of Season 1, episode 1, Nan presented an ad campaign that aims to make their customers see the innate beauty they all have. “Every day it doesn’t matter [to my dog] if I gained weight or if my skin is all broken out or if I can’t stop crying for a week. Every day, he still looks at me exactly the same way, like I am the most beautiful thing he has ever seen,” Nan said during her presentation. “I just thought what if I could see myself the way my dog sees me. What if I could love myself like that? What if we as a brand (Clark + Bow Outfitters), we could do that for our customers? What if instead of showing them this endless parade of perfectly cast and lit and retouched models, what if we just showed people themselves? What if we literally turn all of our storefronts into giant mirrors with big font that just reads: ‘Look at how beautiful you are.’ I think this would be good for our brand. Maybe it would make the world a little bit better place, too.”

Clark + Bow Outfitters Head of Design, Tristen (DaJuan Johnson), liked Nan’s idea and wants to expand on it. Kevin, meanwhile, isn’t a fan of it from the very beginning. Does he think that it’s really a bad idea or he just can’t accept the fact that Nan got recognized for it?

“Downward Dog” Season 1, episode 2 airs on Tuesday, May 23 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
