Dozens of crashes on roads across region as snow, sleet, rain wreaks havoc on morning commuters

Dozens of crashes have been reported in Massachusetts and New Hampshire as snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain wreak havoc on morning commuters Thursday.

‘Limit travel’: Wintery mix causing hazardous travel conditions for morning commute

In Massachusetts, a 40-mph speed restriction is in place on the Massachusetts Turnpike from New York to Boston, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

A tractor-trailer jackknifed on I-495 south near Exit 87 in Chelmsford as the storm ramped up, MassDOT said.

MassDOT also noted that more than 1,300 pieces of equipment are out treating highways across the state.

An SUV skidded off of the westbound side of Interstate 90 near mile marker 118, prompting a warning from Massachusetts State Police.

“Roads across the state are in poor condition. Please pay attention and drive accordingly. Don’t put yourself or others in danger attempting to speed to your destination and leave extra space between you the car in front of you,” state police said.

An SUV also spun out onto the grass off of I-495 north in Boxboro.

The Dedham Police Department urged drivers to use caution on the slick, slushy roads.

“It is slippery on the roads this morning. Please drive slowly and be careful,” the department said in a tweet.

In New Hampshire, state police said more than 30 vehicles have slid off roads and highways since the storm moved in late Wednesday.

“Reduce your speed, leave extra space between you and the vehicle you’re following, and drive for the current conditions,” authorities said in a tweet.

New Hampshire drivers are also reminded to clear snow before they go and that troopers will be out enforcing Jessica’s Law throughout the duration of the storm.

The wintry precipitation will lighten up come the afternoon hours, but dropping temperatures will make for icy conditions.
