Dozens of license plate readers to help identify vehicles linked to crime installed in Dayton

Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are officially in the city of Dayton.

Dayton Police announced Tuesday that all the fixed-place ALPRs had been installed throughout the city.

Dayton City Commission voted approve the use of the technology after a July 2022 public hearing.

The technology is intended to provide police with an automated method of identifying vehicles and license plates connected to criminal activity, a Dayton Police spokesperson said in a release.

The ALPRs work by scanning the license plate of a vehicle and comparing it to national and local crime databases. It then alerts police of any plates associated with things such as stolen vehicles, Amber Alerts, registered owner warrants and terrorist watch lists.
