Dozens of Pilot Whales Stranded at Remote New Zealand Beach

Volunteers worked to save dozens of pilot whales stranded at a remote beach in New Zealand, on Monday, February 22.

Environmental organisation Project Jonah reported 49 pilot whales were stranded at Farewell Spit, while nine had perished.

This video shows volunteers assisting the whales at low tide. The animals are heard ‘whistling’ while covered in damp cloths in an attempt to keep them alive.

On February 23 Project Jonah announced that the remaining pod had refloated offshore and was being monitored by government officials. Credit: seaviewtherapeuticsnz via Storyful
