DPH reports four new COVID-19 deaths, 66 new cases on Cape & Islands

There were 1,699 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts, increasing total cases to 1.7 million since the pandemic began, the state Department of Public Health reported on Thursday.

State officials also reported 339 new probable cases of coronavirus for a statewide total of 160,143.

The DPH said as of July 6 Massachusetts hospitals were treating 526 patients with COVID-19. Forty-five of those patients were in the intensive care unit, or ICU, and 13 were intubated.

In their daily report Thursday, DPH officials said Barnstable County posted 57 new coronavirus cases, for a total 40,731 since the pandemic started. There were six new coronavirus cases in Dukes County, for a total to date of 3,924. Nantucket County reported three new cases, for a total of 3,602.

The state’s 14-day positivity rate was 6.04%. Barnstable County came in at 7.02%, and Dukes and Nantucket’s 14-day positivity rate was 16.01%, the highest in the state, the DPH report indicates.

Cape Cod Hospital treating 18 COVID patients

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis was treating 18 patients with coronavirus. There were no patients in intensive care. Falmouth Hospital reported 10 patients, none of whom were in intensive care. There were four patients with coronavirus in Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, but none in the ICU. Nantucket Cottage Hospital listed one patient with coronavirus. That patient was not in the ICU.

DPH officials said Thursday there were 18 new fatalities among people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, increasing the total deaths to 19,768 since the pandemic began.

There were no deaths from probable cases of COVID-19. The number of fatalities from probable cases is 1,246 in Massachusetts.

There were three new deaths in Barnstable County, the DPH said. The total probable and confirmed deaths from COVID-19 are 607 in Barnstable. There was one new death in Dukes and Nantucket counties combined, for a total fatality count of 19.

The two-week COVID-19 case count, total case count and 14-day testing positivity rate for Cape Cod towns follows:

Barnstable (145; 10,542; 8.0%); Bourne (40; 3,918; 5.28%); Brewster (25; 1,605; 4.8%); Chatham (17; 918; 7.38%); Dennis (44; 2,527; 6.86%); Eastham (10; 545; 7.3%); Falmouth (88; 5,010; 6.33%); Harwich (42; 2,284; 7.05%); Mashpee (50; 2,798; 7.4%); Orleans (12; 848; 5.49%): Provincetown (less than 5; 467; 2.24%); Sandwich (49; 3,872; 7.28%); Truro (less than 5; 184; 2.86%); Wellfleet (8; 300; 8.08%) and Yarmouth (91; 4,913; 9.12%).
