A Dumas man died after a crash involving two semis on Wednesday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

DPS released information Thursday about the crash in Sherman County that left two people injured, with one individual later dying from his injuries. According to a news release, at about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, a 1991 Cub Cadet Truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was eastbound on FM 297, approximately two miles north of Cactus. At the same time, a 2019 Western Star Truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was southbound on U.S. 287.

The first vehicle's driver, Emilio Valencia, 64, of Etter, Texas, disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of FM 297 and US 287, leading to the Cub Cadet Truck tractor striking the second vehicle and its towed semi-trailer, DPS said.

The impact caused the Western Star Truck tractor and its trailer to roll over onto its side in the center median of US 287.

The second semi's driver, identified as Kevin Potter, 67, of Dumas, was taken by ambulance to Moore County Hospital in Dumas, where he later died from the injuries suffered in the crash.

Valencia was taken by ambulance to Moore County Hospital in Dumas with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, where road conditions were dry and clear with a posted speed limit of 75 mph.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
