As previously reported, first responders about to leave the scene of a major accident on US 287 on Sunday witnessed another accident, immediately calling for assistance and a helicopter.

At about 2:06 a.m. Sunday, the Amarillo Emergency Communications Center received a call for mutual aid from the Potter County Sheriff's Office, according to the Amarillo Fire Department (AFD). Deputies on the scene at US 287 and FM 1912 reported a major accident with injuries. Amarillo fire crews arrived on the scene to assist, and four patients were taken by AMS with unknown medical status from the first accident.

Just before leaving to return to the fire station, the last AFD unit on the scene saw a separate high-speed vehicle accident take place. The AFD officer immediately called for additional units and a LifeStar helicopter and began extrication operations and patient care. AFD said traffic in that area was impacted for more than two hours.
