DPS: Shamrock man dies in I-40 crash in Carson County Wednesday during falling snow

One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash early Wednesday in Carson County.

According to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, at approximately 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, a 2019 Freightliner Truck tractor/semi-trailer was eastbound on Interstate 40 about two miles west of Conway, while a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup was westbound during a period of falling snow.

The pickup's driver, Jesus Garcia Jr., 66, of Shamrock, was traveling at an unsafe speed for the conditions of the roadway and lost control of his vehicle. The Dodge Ram slid sideways off of I-40 and entered the center median; it continued to slide sideways across the median and onto the eastbound lanes, in the path of the semi.

The semi's driver, Eldred Page, 37, of Northport, Alabama, attempted to avoid colliding with the pickup by applying emergency braking, but was too close to take any effective evasive action, the release states. The semi struck the pickup on the right side. The pickup spun around and came to rest upright, against a guard rail on the south edge of

the roadway, facing east. The semi traveled into the center median, where it collided with the cable fence barrier and came to final rest a short distance further, facing east.

Garcia died on the scene. He was pronounced dead by Carson County Justice of the Peace Beth Moore. Garcia was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Page, who was also wearing a seat belt, was uninjured.

The posted speed limit was 75 mph. Road conditions were lightly snow packed.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
