A woman and two children died in a major three-vehicle accident east of Alice on Highway 44 Wednesday morning, according to Sgt. Guadalupe Casarez with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

First responders were called to the accident about 7 a.m.

A black Volkswagen Jetta was at a complete stop in the eastbound lane of travel as the driver, 35-year-old Cindy Moreno, was checking on another vehicle that had mechanical issues and was parked in the center median, DPS said in a news release.

A silver GMC Sierra was traveling eastbound on Highway 44 and crashed into the rear of the Volkswagen. Due to the force of the collision, both vehicles crossed the center median and came to rest in the westbound lanes of travel, the news release stated.

Moreno, who lived in Ben Bolt, was taking her children, 16-year-old Aiden and 12-year-old Avery, to school at the Agua Dulce Independent School District.

Moreno and one of the children died on the scene, while the other child was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice and died there.
