Local students in grades 4 through 11 were awarded scholarships, medals and trophies for their academic success or service to their communities.

Students are nominated by teachers at their school to become “Carson Scholars” and only one student from every school is able to apply.

Channel 11′s Jennifer Tomazic emceed the banquet Sunday which was held at Acrisure Stadium.

Recipients get an Olympic-sized medal themselves and a trophy to bring back to their school.

“I would go into the schools and I would give a lot of talks in schools trying to encourage our young people but I know that as soon as I walked into the school, there are all these trophies about sports,” said Dr. Ben Carson. “There was very little mention of the academic superstars.”

Winners of the award also received a $1,000 scholarship.
