Former UCLA gynecologist, who had been out on bond, faces a new indictment and was taken into custody Monday in a LA courtroom.
- Former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of alleged sexual misconduct with patients. The indictment came this morning just as a preliminary hearing was about to begin in downtown LA. That hearing was to determine if Heaps should be ordered to stand trial on previously announced charges of sexual battery or exploitation of seven patients. Attorneys handling civil cases against the doctor say this new indictment now allows for a maximum sentence of more than 90 years. Heaps will be back in court next week.
