Everybody knows Dr. Phil McGraw, the TV therapist.

But not everyone knows McGraw lived in Topeka in the early 1970s.

Topeka has its fair share of celebrities with ties to the capital city. Following are 10.

Kenny Starr

"Kenny Starr" is the stage name of Topeka-born singer Kenneth Trebbe, 68, who grew up in Burlingame.

Starr's biggest hit single, "Blind Man in the Bleachers," reached No. 2 in 1976 on Billboard's "Hot Country Songs" chart.

Starr recorded 13 songs that made the top 100 on the Hot Country Songs chart between 1973 and 1978. He also was a member of country star Loretta Lynn's touring band, the Coal Miners.

Gregg Binkley

Television actor Gregg Binkley was born in Topeka and graduated in 1981 from Washburn Rural High School, where he was class president.

Binkley, 57, has made appearances on numerous TV shows.

He was part of the cast for the NBC-TV sitcom "My Name is Earl" and the Fox-TV sitcom "Raising Hope."

Binkley also appeared in the movie "Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation."

James Reynolds

Actor James Reynolds grew up in Oskaloosa and served with the Marines in Vietnam before becoming a student at Topeka's Washburn University, where he got into acting.

Reynolds, 74, has appeared since 1981 as police commander Abe Carver on the NBC-TV soap opera "Days of Our Lives," for which he won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018.

Reynolds took short breaks from the show in 1991 and 2003 but continued to appear as a recurring character.

Wil Wheaton

Actor Wil Wheaton, now 48, gained widespread attention as a teenager by appearing in movies that included "Stand By Me" and "Toy Soldiers" and being part of the cast for the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

He then lived in Topeka in the mid-1990s while working for NewTek, a technology company that was heavily involved in entertainment.

Wheaton more recently appeared as a fictionalized version of himself in 17 episodes of the popular CBS-TV sitcom "The Big Bang Theory."

Katrina Leskanich

Katrina Leskanich was born in Topeka to a military family that relocated frequently, and moved in 1976 to the United Kingdom.

She became lead singer there for a band called "Katrina and the Waves." It put out a hit single called "Walking on Sunshine," which topped out at No. 9 in 1985 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Katrina and the Waves later won the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest for the United Kingdom with "Love Shine a Light," a song that went on to peak at No. 3 on the UK Singles chart. Leskanich, 60, left the band to pursue a solo career in 1998.

Brandon Adams

Topeka-born Brandon Quinton Adams was 9 years old when he won a Young Artist Award for his performance in Michael Jackson's 1988 experimental anthology musical film, "Moonwalker."

Adams was then part of the cast for the 1992 movie "The Mighty Ducks," the 1993 film "The Sandlot" and the 1994 movie "D2: The Mighty Ducks." He won another Young Artist Award for his performance in "The Sandlot."

Adams, now 41, has appeared in 15 shows and 12 movies, with the most recent being in 2012.

Jayne Houdyshell

A 1971 graduate of Topeka High School, Topeka-born Jayne Houdyshell spent about 25 years appearing in regional theater around the country.

She then embarked on a successful Broadway career that's seen her receive four Tony Award nominations, including a win in 2016 for her performance in "The Humans."

Houdyshell, 67, has also performed in numerous television shows and films.

She was part of the cast for "Little Women," which received critical acclaim and grossed more than $218 million worldwide after it debuted in theaters in December 2019.

Bill Kurtis

Bill Kurtis was credited for saving many lives by warning viewers, “For God’s sake, take cover!” as a massive F5 tornado bore down upon Topeka on June 8, 1966.

Kurtis, a native of Florida, had just earned a law degree from Washburn Law School and was working as a newscaster here for WIBW-TV when the 1966 tornado struck.

Kurtis, 80, went on to anchor the CBS Morning News and serve as longtime anchor of CBS-TV’s WBBM-TV in Chicago.

He has also hosted various A&E crime and news documentary shows, including “Investigative Reports,” “American Justice” and “Cold Case Files.”

Annette Bening

Topeka-born Annette Bening has enjoyed a long career as a movie actress, which included receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

Bening, 62, was 1 year old when she and her family moved from Topeka to Wichita. They later lived in California, where she got into acting.

Benning has won two Golden Globe awards for her performances in "Being Julia" and "The Kids Are Alright." She has been nominated four times for Academy Awards.

Bening has been married since 1992 to famed actor Warren Beatty. They have four children.

Phil McGraw

Phil McGraw was 21 years old in 1971 when he teamed up with his father and two friends to open a private health club in Topeka.

The club went bankrupt and McGraw moved away, leaving some customers feeling upset because they'd signed lifetime membership contracts requiring them to pay monthly dues for set amounts of time, regardless of whether the club remained open.

McGraw had sold those contracts to financial institutions for small amounts paid up front, meaning members still had to pay their fees to those institutions after the club closed.

McGraw went on to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree in experimental psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology.

He then rose to fame while making appearances in the late 1990s on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

In 2002, Winfrey helped McGraw launch his own program, "Dr. Phil," which has become one of the most-watched syndicated shows on TV.

McGraw has also written four best-selling books and co-founded the telehealth company Doctors On Demand.

He makes $65.5 million a year, Fortune magazine reported last June.
