Drag racing: Duluth native Greg Anderson proves who's boss in Atlanta
May 3—There was no stopping Duluth native Greg Anderson Sunday in Atlanta as the four-time Pro Stock champion drove to victory in the 40th and final Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals.
Anderson, the Pro Stock points leader, defeated Vincent Nobile in the final round in his Chevrolet Camaro, with an elapsed time of 6.568 seconds at 209.04 mph to Nobile's run of 6.598 at 208.78. That was good for Anderson's second victory this year and 96th of his career, putting him one away from tying Iron Range native Warren Johnson for the most in Pro Stock history. It also was also Anderson's fifth victory at Atlanta Dragway, tying him with Johnson and giving Anderson a memorable sendoff for the facility.
"It was an absolute dream weekend," Anderson said in a release. "My (car) was absolutely flawless all weekend long. I've never made four smoother, nicer runs on race day than this. It's just been an awesome day and a storybook deal. There's a lot of history here and I love racing here. To tie Warren and to go out with five each, it's great. It's been a dream, it's been wonderful and I want to thank everyone who has helped us."
Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Bob Tasca III and Scotty Pollacheck (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were Sunday's other winners.
