Drake Says Rihanna Is the Reason He "Hesitated" Before Collaborating With Chris Brown

From Cosmopolitan

  • Drake claims that he didn't want to disappoint Rihanna by collaborating with her abusive ex, Chris Brown.

  • Drake and Chris have since then put their Rihanna-related feud to rest.

Welp, chances are you probably never thought you'd be hearing about this love triangle ever again, but Drake is fully out here discussing his relationship with Rihanna, and how that ultimately affected his friendship and collaboration status with Chis Brown. Late 2019 is really the gift that keeps on giving, y'all. If you need a lil refresher on exactly WTF happened in these roundabout romances, keep on scrollin'!

Rihanna and Chris infamously began dating in 2008 and broke up the following year after he seriously abused her. Following Rih and Chris' break up, she started getting flirty with Drake and briefly dated him in 2009, but denied it multiple times (poor Aubrey). After Drake and Rih's songs, "What's my Name," came out in 2010, people were fully convinced they were dating (again!), but still no confirmation—womp womp.

Fast forward to 2013, and Rih and Chris got back together, and broke up later that same year (whew). Fast forward ANOTHER three years later, and things between Rih and Drake appeared to be calm and cool again...until they started officially (!!!) dating in 2016, but of course they broke up too *sigh*.

In between all of this back and forth, there was that one crazy time in 2012 when Drake and Chris got into a massive bar brawl after Chris allegedly sent a bottle with a note that said "I'm the f*cking love of your life." So yeah, it kinda goes without saying that Drake and Chris haven't had the best relationship—not that you should even be friends with a person who once abused the girl you've had a crush on 5ever, but that's just my opinion.

Now, Drake is saying that his and Chris' beef was "silly" considering the fact that they were fighting and limiting their possible collaboration opportunities because of Rihanna. Drake's words, y'all.

"I think we’ve come together before and tried to link and make music,” Drake said in an interview with Rap Radar. “I think we were always kind of forcing it. I think there was always resentment on both sides. You know, really at the end of the day, when you kind of step away from it and break it down, you start to feel silly because it’s over girl stuff. But obviously that can snowball into real shit and that is what happened.”

So you're probably fuming rn at Drake's use of the word "silly," right? I know I am, but thankfully he managed to backtrack that statement. Apparently, Drake wanted to make sure that Rihanna was cool with him collaborating with Chris, because she didn't want her to feel disrespected in any way. According to Drake, Rihanna knew that this was an issue weighing on both Drake and Chris' mind, and she'd rather see them move on.

“Well, I think we both just grew up to the point that person that was kind of in the middle of us is like no longer a part of either of our lives currently, and I have the utmost love and respect for her,” he added. “I think of her as family more than anything and I felt — I actually had kind of a moment of hesitation before because I didn’t want her to ever feel disrespected by me linking up with him, but I also know how many nights she knows that me and him have both been consumed by this issue, and I think she is a good person with a good heart who would rather see us put the issue to bed than continue like childish shit that could end up in a serious situation.”

I'll honestly never listen to a Chris Brown and Drake collaboration, but as long as Rihanna is okay with this happening...then so am I.
