Drake women's basketball player Megan Meyer to miss remainder of the season with torn ACL

The Drake women’s basketball team will have to finish the season without one of its best players.

Drake announced Monday that senior guard Megan Meyer will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL that will require surgery. The injury occurred during a practice over holiday break. A recent MRI revealed the injury.

It’s a big loss for Drake, which loses a key contributor and a strong shooter with tons of experience. Meyer averaged 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 43.3% from the field including 33.3% from 3-point range in eight games this season. She did not play in the Bulldogs' weekend games at Illinois State (a loss) and at Bradley (a win).

The 5-foot-8 Mason City native was last season's Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned first-team All-MVC recognition after averaging 12.1 points in 25.9 minutes per game. Meyer was the only Drake player to start all 34 games.

She came to Drake after playing two seasons at Iowa, where she appeared in 40 games.  The Mason City High School star helped her school win the Class 4A title in 2016.

The Bulldogs, picked to finish third in this year’s Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll, are 6-4 this season and 1-1 in MVC play.
