Dramatic video shows migrant rescue following boat capsize

Dramatic footage of the Italian coastguard rescuing a group of migrants whose boat had capsized was released on Monday (November 25).

The video shows a young girl being pulled from the waves, with many others waiting to be taken to safety.

149 people were rescued, including 13 women and three children, from the 10-meter-long sinking vessel on Saturday (November 23).

It was reported in distress less than one mile off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

At least 5 bodies, all women, were retrieved early on Sunday (November 24) after the shipwreck.

Survivors said up to 20 people were unaccounted for, according to a judicial source.

Adding that those missing at sea were from Algeria, Tunisia and Pakistan.

There were very different scenes on another migrant ship which has been carrying 62 African migrants since Wednesday (November 20).

Italian authorities finally agreed on Sunday night to allow the Spanish rescue mission vessel access to a port to disembark those onboard.

The mediterranean country initially refused the vessel entry, suggesting that it should instead put the migrants ashore at Tripoli, Libya.

But then the Italian coastguard evacuated 11 of the group who needed medical attention and Italy's Interior Minister signaled the country might be softening its position.

The International Organization for Migration says there have been nearly 1,000 confirmed deaths on the three main routes across the Mediterranean so far this year.
