Two new plays in development can be seen this month over Zoom in a continuing series of readings presented by Palm Beach Dramaworks.

First up on Monday in the Drama(in the)Works series is "Untitled Lincoln Play," by Bill Cain, a Jesuit priest and playwright whose stage works include "Equivocation" and "How to Write a New Book for the Bible." The new play is set on the eve of President Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865, and during the Pullman Strike of 1894 in Chicago.

"Untitled Lincoln Play" examines "how American history was both written and continues to repeat itself through man’s obsession with money, power and controlling the narrative,” according to Palm Beach Dramaworks.

The second play, set for May 23, is "Westminster," by Brenda Withers. The co-author of "Matt & Ben" with her college friend Mindy Kaling, Withers’ other works include "The Kritik" and "The Ding Dongs."

"Westminster" is a four-person play that takes a look at what happens when Krys gives a rescue dog to her old friend Pia, leading to a faceoff between the two women and their partners. “Part morality play, part screwball romp, ‘Westminster’ digs into ‘acceptable’ social prejudices and the consequences of leaving those biases unchecked,” Withers writes in a website description of her play.

Both plays begin at 7:30 p.m. and are followed by a talkback hosted by Bruce Linser, manager of The Dramaworkshop.

Tickets are free, but reservations are required. Visit palmbeachdramaworks.org or call the box office at 561-514-4042, ext. 2.
