Footwear Designer Sophia Webster Scoops 2016 Fashion Fund Win
It’s a very good day for Sophia Webster. The British designer has been announced as the winner of this year’s BFC/ Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, which is a huge feat for any up-and-coming label.
The award provides the accessories designer, renowned for her sassy slogans and colourful designs, with a £200,000 grant to develop her business as well as a bespoke mentoring programme.
Sophia was shortlisted for this year’s prize along alongside designers Emilia Wickstead, Mother of Pearl, Osman and Prism. But she beat them all to score the win - just like her mentor Nicholas Kirkwood did back in 2013.
She’s already gained a celebrity following including Rihanna, Miley Cryus and FKA Twigs and is becoming something of a household name (if you house has deep pockets).
“Sophia Webster is a great winner for this year’s award” commented Alexandra Shulman OBE, Editor of British Vogue and Chair of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund.
“The brand encapsulates all the originality and creativity that British fashion is known for while Sophia and her team have pursued a clear vision with drive and professionalism.”
We cannot wait to see how Sophia’s brand develops over the next few years as she joins a long list of winners including 2015’s winner Mary Katrantzou. Previous established designers include Peter Pilotto, Christopher Kane and Erdem. So we’re sure the designer is set for big things.
“It feels amazing!” Sophia told Vogue. “I’m so shocked; I still can’t quite take it in. This will just make such a massive difference to our business.
“The store is next on the agenda, we only just got the keys last week, so that’s our next focus. After that, our team is growing and we’ve really outgrown our space so next will be a new office. It’s incredible.”
