White-and-gold/blue-and-black dress spawns slew of Internet memes

As a chromatically confusing dress caused friends to fall out in heated arguments across the country Thursday evening, memes about the apparel’s supposed sorcery quickly spread across the Internet.

Houses are divided over whether the dress is white and gold or blue and black. And there are several theories as to why so many disagree.

The trouble started when a Scottish musician, 21-year-old Caitlin McNeill, posted a picture of the dress on Tumblr.

Compelling evidence suggests the actual garment is black and blue. But who are you going to believe, the truth or your own eyes?

The child from the Nationwide Insurance advertisement that ran during the Super Bowl earlier this month probably could have cleared up the matter for everyone, but we all know what happened there.

Then again, others speculated, might the Left Shark, another viral sensation from the Super Bowl, be responsible for this madness?

Others, in jest, tried to make the whole hullabaloo even more confusing by tossing out alternative perspectives, such as thinking the dress somewhat resembled a rainbow.

The dress clogged up Twitter and Facebook feeds so quickly that many people awoke Friday morning to find a full-fledged debate they knew nothing about — and needed to get up to speed quickly.

Quite a few turned to the 1997 comedy “Liar Liar” starring Jim Carrey to express coming to terms with the dress’ actual color, despite their vision telling them otherwise.

Others took the opportunity to reminisce about the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” television show from the 1990s. After all, they joke, might the white power ranger actually be the blue-and-black power ranger?

Many think that the dress is distracting people from issues that matter a great deal more, such as climate change or the Islamic State. Even the comedic @TheTweetOfGod handle chimed in about humankind's apparently warped priorities.

The dress caused quite a bit of trouble among friends, families and lovers. Some don’t even want to step into the fray by offering their opinions on the highly contested issue.
