The Drill: 'Change your face' is words of advice for Lilly Mahlberg

May 2—WORTHINGTON — There is a saying that all good golfers have short-term memories. For Lilly Mahlberg those few words stand out as some of the best advice she has received on the country club links.

The Worthington High School senior is in the midst of a strong season, and is instrumental to a strong and experienced team.

Her one issue on the course is getting into her own head. But the words of girls golf head coach Brooke Hermsen can often be found floating around, advising listeners to "change your face and put a smile on it."

As Mahlberg has grown up from an eighth grader to being a senior, so too has her golf game evolved. No longer does she swing her driver as hard as possible to get the ball the furthest she can. Instead she takes a bit of speed off and focuses on getting her ball to a desirable spot in the fairway.

Mahlberg is not only an excellent golfer, she is also a very bright and active student at WHS. She is the president of both the Student Council and FFA. She also is a member of the National Honor Society, competes on the speech team and played volleyball last fall.

One thing that you might not know about Lilly Mahlberg is that she keeps a list of movies and television shows that she has watched on her phone. She says she does this so that she can remember what she has seen and not feel a sense of deja vu.

Mahlberg is committed to play collegiate golf next year at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. There, she plans to double major in biology and health sciences.

QUESTION: Can you tell us about your role on the golf team?

ANSWER: I will say that my role on the golf team includes being a leader. As one of the four seniors this year we have all taken on a role of leadership... helping the underclassmen really work on their golf game and focus. I will also say we help with getting underclassmen rides to the golf course and bringing them home and things like that.

QUESTION: What are your strengths on the golf course?

ANSWER: My strengths on the golf course include my seven iron shots, putting and my driver. My goal with the driver used to be to get it as far as I could but now definitely as I am older I do think being able to be in the fairway is a huge advantage. So I try and reduce my speed or distance for some accuracy.
