Phoenix police are investigating a shooting near First Avenue and Thomas Road that left a girl younger than 13 and a teenage boy injured Friday afternoon.

At about 4:40 p.m. officers found the girl and boy with gunshot wounds. The boy remains in critical condition in the hospital while the girl was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to Sgt. Melissa Soliz, a spokesperson for Phoenix Police Department, early information indicates the teen boy was in a vehicle with other occupants when another vehicle drove by and began shooting. The teen was struck by gunfire and the suspect vehicle drove away before officers arrived on scene, she said.

Police say that while the shooting took place, the girl had been walking in the area with an adult relative and was injured by gunfire.

"Detectives processed the scene which spanned almost over four city blocks," Soliz said. "Multiple businesses were struck by gunfire."

Police say no other community members were injured.
